Sun Health’s Center for Health & Wellbeing offers many evidence-based programs led by highly-trained and certified experts in their field, and without exception is our Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and our Diabetes Self-Management Education (DMSE) program.

These highly acclaimed programs are successful in helping attendees in some cases prevent diabetes from developing and in others, help those diagnosed manage it.

Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP)

The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is an evidence-based lifestyle change and education program that can lower your risk of having a heart attack or stroke, improve your wellbeing, help you feel more energetic, and even reverse your prediabetes diagnosis.

Research shows that individuals who participated in the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) who lost 5-7% of their body weight and added 150 minutes of exercise per week cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 58% (71% for people over 60 years old). DPP programs have been around for 10 years, with Sun Health first offering program in 2014. Even a decade later nationally, program participants were one-third less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than individuals who did not join a program.

Sun Health is the first and only in-person Diabetes Prevention Program covered by Medicare.  Additionally, many commercial health plans cover the DPP program when offered through a CDC fully-recognized organization such as Sun Health.

Diabetes Self-Management Education Program (DSME)

Diabetes Self-Management Education is an evidence-based program that has been proven to lower health care costs, decrease A1c levels, control blood pressure & cholesterol, and improve quality of life.

As one former participant who highly recommends the class says, “Sun Health’s registered dietitians and certified diabetes educators who lead the series, was professional and knowledgeable and had an easy manner in conveying the material. He gave lots of time for answers to questions. I particularly appreciated the one on one consultation I received to review my goals and make suggestions.”

The Sun Health Center for Health & Wellbeing program is accredited by the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists and taught by a certified diabetes educator who is a registered dietitian.

Both programs have sessions starting in July and August and in many cases the costs are covered by insurance.
